Old brick is soft. Modern portland-heavy mortar is hard. Put hard mortar in a soft-brick wall and the brick faces spall off instead of the joint wearing, which is why so many repointed historic walls look worse a decade later. We match mortar to the wall, not to the bag that was on the truck.
